One way some forums do it is you can't use a free email account like yahoo, hotmail so a validate email has to be sent to a email address which you use with your isp email address

I too use my Hotmail Account for virtually everything. :hello:

I think we are headed to validating every new user before they are allowed to Post. We may also restrict where a newbie can post. That, and the lag in validation should cut spam down somewhat.

Ok, new users now need > 3 posts and to be registered for > 3 days before they can start a thread. Lets see if that helps at all.

Given the experience we've had with spammers on the Forum I help admin, I'm convinced that's going to solve the problem here as well. Good work, JL.

I originally had it set up similarly, but rather than them not having the option to start a thread, they weren't allowed to post links... but for some reason that didn't seem to be working as planned, so we've had to resort to this.

Just installed a mod that is supposed to check the IP, username and email of users when they register and compare them against a database of known spammers, and won't let them register. Let's see how well this works.

Seems to be working so far! It's already blocked about 20 spammers from registering. A few have gotten through, but nothing a click on the "delete user" button can't fix lol.
