When I insert a blank sony CD-R BOTH Nero and Alcohol 120% state there is no disk in the drive...
What Gives?
Ip to this point I have re-installed both programs with the latest versions and flashed the firm ware up too....checked all connections etc...
any ideas?
Big Daddy,
First we'd like a bit of info (what versions of Nero / Alcohol - have you upgraded to the latest versions??) and I'll guess you are running Windows XP (Home or Pro).
Are you certain the disk is blank ? Is it an CD-RW or CD-R ?When you put a Blank disk into the Drive without any Burning app what happens ?
Does any burning app work ?? Please advise.

All latest versions of software, firmwares, and OS...XP Pro.
The blanks are in fact blank...Sony CD-R 700mB. No burning apps work...and when a blank is just placed in the drive the read lamp lights up for about 10-15 secs then goes out...No windows open or warnings of any kind...
The funny thing is that the drive still shows up in the device manager...working perfectly...seems to read fine...just won't recognize blanks...

Did you try another brand of media? Maybe you got a bad batch of discs. Also, make sure you don't have anything (like CloneCD) running that may block the atip check.

no burning apps work
have you tried ISObuster
i have noticed that isobuster will tell me if a disc is blank when windows and some other programs dont think i even have a disk in the drive. (but then again, ive used it before to read discs that windows fuxbars when i try to read them (scratched) but isobuster grabs the data quick and easily
Gents,
My first suggestion (after confirming the media is okay in another PC) is to Right Click on My Computer => Properties => Hardware Tab => Device Manager =>Expand the DVD/CD-ROM Drives and see if the Hardware is OK (No Yellow or Red Exclamation Marks).
If OK I'd say the OS (Windows XP) is reporting the device as a CD ROM reader only. It may be this "Bit" somehow got toggled off. Another way to check is to Right on the Drive in Explorer and go Properties. If the Recording Tab is there; Windows XP sees the Burner as a Burner, then click on the Recording tab just to see if the "Enable CD Recording" Box is active. Toggle it on / off /on - sometimes this helps but rarely.:(
Usually the next step would be to unintstall the device (in device manager above - you don't have to physically remove it) then reboot the machine and Windows should "find" it again. Then you can check it to see if it's a Burner, either as above, or with Alcohol or Nero.
If not we are either going towards a firmware flash or checking it in another Box.
I hope this is helpful.:)

NO updates as yet...I have done everything except a full system re-install. Is there ANYTHING else I should do besides a full system re-install? I emailed Lite-on and they told me to return it to Newegg, but I can't because Newegg only has a thirty-day policy. SOOO I emailed again and am waiting for a reply.

this might sound funny, but,
have you tried to burn a file to the cd burner useing windows xp burning option?
right click on a file you want to back up to a cd, then click on send to you cd burner.
then tell it to burn files to the burner.
if it works then you know that your burner works.
this happend to me one time, and the xp burning feature worked.
my only fix i found was a fresh windows install.
Ripper,
I asked a few questions of Big Daddy  (the one about the Tabs would indicate if Windows "sees" the device as a Burner. If the OS doesn't, no program will either, and no disk will be able to be burnt :surprised .) and await his replies so I can assist further :nodhead2: .

Hey guys!
I thought you had given up on me...The problem is that the burner does not recognize blank media of any kind...I have trie deverything you have suggested thus far except for getting Wndows to burn the CD...the drive shows up alll the way around...checked the tabs and it does show up in the properties tabs...Enabled and disabled CD recording in Recording properties tab...tried to burn a cD using the XP burning option and it says the same thing..."please insert a blank disc...."...So I guess I am SKROOOD.
Any suggestions guys?

windows messenger me you noob.
Big D,
Try installing it in another PC if you can. That way if it doesn't work there you know it's the Burner and not your OS :nodhead: . How about your Girlfriend's PC, is there anyway to install it there and try it ?
